The output device could not be initialized

Well, sound configuration under Ubuntu isn’t comfortable. A few days ago, the recording failed (Ubuntu 8.10). Today, the output device could not be initialized (Ubuntu 9.04):

I started reading the simple guide for Jaunty Jackalope users:

“if some applications work and others don’t, this is for you”

I hope that I will learn more about sound under Ubuntu. At the moment, I am able to record with Audacity and to play a wav file with Totem Movie Player. So I should be able to configure simon correctly.
