I just created a TrueCrypt file under Ubuntu. It was the first time that I created a hidden container within the outer container. It is a pretty complicated concept. I am using this complicated concept with the hidden container just for backup. It works.
I hope that it will be possible in a future version of TrueCrypt to encrypt the hole Ubuntu system. Under Win XP, this is already possible.
By the way, I just saw that TrueCrypt 6.2 is available. You might want to take a look into the new features.

I just used Synaptic to install the tutorial software Wink. For Windows, there is the version 2.x available. For Linux, it is just version 1.5. I will give the Linux version a try. I tried before on Ubuntu XVidCap, and Istanbul Desktop Session Recorder, but both programs didn’t work out.

I am considering to migrate from Thunderbird (Win XP) to Evolution (Ubuntu 9.04). I found an interesting article (haven’t read it completely, just the beginning). And maybe I should read about how to import emails from Thunderbird to Evolution.
Currently, I am downloading and sending my emails via Thunderbird under Win XP using SMTP/POP3. I don’t use IMAP because I find it too complicated. Since I have started to use Ubuntu as my main operating system (dual boot, different hard drives), I have to think about migrating my emails from Win XP to Ubuntu 9.04.
And to be honest: I don’t like Thunderbird because it doesn’t have an explicit export function for emails. Outlook Express does have an export function. It is always the same: Microsoft is better than Linux. That’s the simple truth. Thunderbird needs to be more user-friendly. I don’t need lots of features, but an export function is a sign of user-friendliness.

I just installed a few files with Synaptic following this sound guide. Interesting tip:
“With jaunty (not sure about intrepid), try this:
pulseaudio –kill
then
sudo alsa reload
It’s worked for me everytime so far, but it has to be done during a user session.”
Good tip, but I won’t try it because Audacity is able to record and Totem is able to play wav files at the moment. But how is it possible to play sound with simon?
Here is another interesting tip. Maybe I should take a closer look at Mint. By the way, this could be an option for the PC that is connected to the video beamer for playing DVDs.

Here are a few screenshots of my sound configuration. I am not satisfied at the moment. Ubuntu is much more complicated when it comes to sound than Win XP. I am trying to find a better configuration than my current one:

Sound Preferences

Sound wave doesn’t look perfect under Audacity
I want a cleaner sound wave under Audacity. It should sound better than now.

Audacity preferences
I will do some trial and error to find a proper solution. Maybe I will install JACK.
I just found some useful tips. I just read a few lines and checked the volume control on the panel. I adjusted a value. It is better now.

I am interested in producing some screencasts about open source software. Which screencast software works well under Ubuntu? I have found this overview. Then I downloaded xvidcap_1.1.7intrepid_i386.deb. But obviously, there is a newer version available in a software channel. So I will take a look into Synaptic. A few months ago, I have tried XVidCap on Ubuntu. But probably it was an old version. It was disgusting. So I will try the version that is offered by Synaptic.

A few hours ago, I installed Qt Creator with Applications > Add/Remove. And I just watched this tutorial video. I was able to do some first steps with the Qt Creator. That’s a really great help to get started.
By the way, why am I interested in Qt? Because Simon is developped with Qt.

I just took a look at the page Stable versions of tor Then I typed into the terminal:
liberty@liberty-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install tor
[sudo] password for liberty:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package tor is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package tor has no installation candidate
liberty@liberty-desktop:~$
So, I wasn’t successful. To get a Tor release, I have to modify the following line:
deb http://mirror.noreply.org/pub/tor <DISTRIBUTION> main
I have to know the name of the Ubuntu 9.04 release. It is Jaunty Jackalope. I may have to type:
deb http://mirror.noreply.org/pub/tor jaunty main
But this didn’t work out. So I have to find a different way. Maybe I have to modify a file with the sources. Well, I find it too complicated at the moment. I might succeed. But I am using Ubuntu because it is user friendly. Why is it so complicated to install Tor? Maybe I should take a look at this blog post.
I tried the following line:
liberty@liberty-desktop:~$ sudo -i
But now I will try something different (found at http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-9.04-p2 ):
liberty@liberty-desktop:~$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
[sudo] password for liberty:
Well I don’t want to modify /etc/apt/sources.list at the moment. It is too much work. So I will continue to surf without Tor.
This might be the key:
“Tor just updated their repos to reflect jaunty….
http://mirror.noreply.org/pub/tor/dists/
The repos would be
Code:
deb http://mirror.noreply.org/pub/tor jaunty main
deb-src http://mirror.noreply.org/pub/tor jaunty main”

I just installed with Synaptic Package Manager the password manager KeePassX 0.3.4 on Ubuntu 9.04. The current version 0.4.0 isn’t available via Synaptic.
I didn’t upgrade my hard drive containing Ubuntu 8.10. I made a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 on a different hard drive. In a few a months or so, I will format my Ubuntu 8.10 hard drive completely with TrueCrypt. Of course, I will migrate some files first.

I recommend after the installation of Ubuntu 9.04 to follow these instructions. By the way, I don’t upgrade my Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04. I am using a different hard drive with Ubuntu 9.04 on it. Never touch a running system. About half a year ago, I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 8.10. It was a mistake. Two steps forward, but one important step backwards. And what was the step backwards? I wasn’t able to play a dvd anymore without getting x-runs. And I don’t know how to fix this. So my approach is to use separate hard drives with different operating systems (Win XP, Ubuntu 8.10, Ubuntu 9.04). Every system has advantages and disadvantages. At the moment, I still mainly use Ubuntu 8.10.
